What is Home Grown Hope?
In November 2024, a team from Christian Aid Ireland and Northern Irish chef, Mollie Cunningham, travelled to Nairobi, Kenya to visit urban farming projects established by our local faith partner, Beacon of Hope. These projects are transforming the lives of people living in a densely packed, impoverished community where hunger and domestic violence are significant challenges. By training men and women to utilise specifically designed urban farming techniques, Beacon of Hope and Christian Aid are facilitating this community’s move towards social, physical, economic and spiritual empowerment.
The event
Home Grown Hope is an event designed to share the stories the incredible women and men involved with the farming projects.
Thanks to the dedication of Beacon of Hope and Christian Aid Kenya, we have a vision to see more people within these communities, especially women, given the opportunity to learn new skills, and to be supported and empowered to transform their lives and the lives of those around them.

Mollie Cunningham is a talented, passionate chef who grows her own produce on her family farm in Killyleagh, which she cooks and sells through her business, Ballytrim Pantry. While in Nairobi, Mollie had the opportunity to visit several urban farming projects and spent time with the women and men who are involved in them. Mollie will be recreating these dishes live at Home Grown Hope, while also sharing about her experiences during the trip.
